Make it

It all started with me wanting a pair of mukluks and my husband saying “make it yourself; you’re very capable”. So I got the leather, fur, and sheepskin, made a pattern by wrapping my feet in socks, a plastic bag, and duct tape, and hand stitched my first pair of mukluks.

Then I made a pair for a sister, and a friend, and it continued for a few years. I did get an industrial machine to make it easier. I also made a few bags, because there’s a few things I love, and bags and shoes are two categories at the top of the list.

Eventually I stopped making mukluks because of the mess and the rash/itch I got from the floaty fur. For a few years I stopped altogether because we moved into a very small house that didn’t have the space I needed for my sewing machine. When we built a larger house again, I moved my machine back home and started up again, but without the mukluks.
